The cause

One event, one mission. To make a difference in the Coastal Bend against Pediatric Cancer.

Every year, we hold a day of fun in the sun, celebrating life, and raising money for a child and their family battling cancer. Everything from the event and sponsor registrations, to raffle tickets goes towards a new family chosen once a year. Join us Next year and make a difference!

The Cinco de Mayo Memorial Cancer Fund, LLC is a registered 501c3 Non-Profit Organization. All Donations are 100% tax deductible. 100% of all funds raised are donated to a local child from the Coastal Bend Area. Each years recipient is identified by Driscoll Children’s Hospital Care Management Services

The history

You can’t know the history of the Cinco de Mayo Memorial without mentioning the name Kevin Greer. Kevin was a visionary.

In 2012, after the passing of his brother, James Greer, Kevin decided he would begin a horseshoes tournament that the 210 Beach Bums would run every Cinco de Mayo. Originally this included a surf contest. In 2013, with his love of the local surfing community and the Beach Bums, Kevin created the first Cinco de Mayo Pro event. The event would raise money to give scholarships to local young surfers. This became an annual event and grew with the help of sponsors and the locals.

By 2017, the Cinco de Mayo pro event grew to add a paddleboard race and volleyball tournament. It was a huge success.

Sadly, on October 10th 2017, Kevin Greer passed away from cancer. It was a hube loss to all and in 2018 the event was cancelled. During this time, Troy Helbling, Larry Streight and Michael and Connie Garza decided to bring the Cinco love back to the beach. With the blessings of the Beach Bums and Steven Greer (Kevin’s surviving brother) we created the Cinco de Mayo Memorial.

This nonprofit organization raises money for pediatric cancer with the same spirit of the years passed. In 2019, the first Cinco de Mayo Memorial Event was held at South Packery Beach, Mile Marker 210, in front of the Salty Souls Memorial.

This has been an annual event ever since. With the help of the beach bums, sponsors and donations given, we have had the privilege to raise over $60,000 for local children and their families struggling with pediatric cancer.
